Transportation and Housing Study
(Approved June 2005 )

In May 2004, the San Antonio-Bexar County Metropolitan Planning Organization undertook a Transportation and Housing Study. The purpose of the study was to quantify costs associated with transportation (car purchase, finance charges, rental or lease charges, gas and motor oil, maintenance, insurance and public transportation) and housing (purchase or rent, fuel, taxes, insurance, maintenance and repairs) as compared to income. The study area was the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area which is comprised of Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina and Wilson Counties. While there are some limitations to the data available, the study results indicate the cost of travel between employment and housing locations is a disproportionate burden on low income populations, since affordable housing tends to be located in inner city areas and in rural areas, while jobs are increasingly located in more affluent suburbs. This spatial mismatch necessitates travel while reducing transportation choices such as walking, biking or transit because suburban and rural areas usually lack frequent transit service or safe pedestrian and bicycle routes.
