MPO Kicks Off Walk&Roll

MPO Chair and City Councilwoman Sheila McNeil hosted a well-attended Walk&Roll Kickoff Press Conference at the VIA Metro Center just prior to the Transportation Policy Board meeting on Monday April 28th. She was joined by San Antonio Councilpersons Diane Cibrian and John Clamp as well as Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson, Judge Oscar Kazen, TxDOT Interim District Engineer Julie Brown, AACOG Executive Director Gloria Arriaga and VIA Board Member Hank Brummett. Each speaker pointed out the many benefits of a multimodal transportation system that encourages walking, cycling, carpooling and transit.

In addition to announcing the 2008 Walk&Roll Corporate Challenge in June and the Personal Challenge in September, they also invited everyone to attend two upcoming events.

The first is our 12th annual Walk&Roll to Work Rally from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. Friday, May 2nd at the newly renovated Main Plaza.  City of San Antonio, Bexar County and other downtown employees will walk or bike from various locations to the Rally for music, refreshments, door prizes and motivational remarks presented by City of San Antonio, Bexar County, TxDOT, VIA and AACOG officials. VIA Metropolitan Transit is providing free rides to cyclists on this day. Shelly Miles of WOAI TV will be our Master of Ceremonies. Invite your organization to come out and participate!

For family-style fun, our second event is the Walk&Roll Fest from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10th at the Botanical Gardens (555 Funston). We are having 5 k and 10 k walks as well as longer (Mission Trails) and shorter (Brackenridge Park) bike rides. Again music, refreshments, informational exhibits and door prizes will be provided. The first 750 Fest participants will be able to enter the Botanical Gardens free of charge.

Walk, Roll and Reap the Benefits

Gloria Arriaga, Executive Director, AACOG announced this year’s Walk&Roll Challenges at the MPO’s Press Conference.

“ Last year a single event was responsible for reducing more than 560,000 miles driven on local roadways, preventing the release of approximately one ton of ozone-forming emissions, and providing a significantly greater decrease in greenhouse gas emissions - the 2007 Walk & Roll Corporate Challenge,” Arriaga said.

With higher gas prices and an ever-increasing interest in global warming and other environmental issues, the 2008 Corporate Challenge promises to reap even greater benefits for the region.

The Walk & Roll Corporate Challenge, a month-long event conducted each June, encourages friendly competition among government agencies, businesses, schools, and industries to determine which organizations have the most employees willing to use alternative forms of commuting to and from work.

Employees participate in the Walk & Roll Corporate Challenge by logging their “smart miles” on the Walk & Roll web site at www.walkandrollchallenge.com.   Smart miles include walking, riding a bike, riding the bus, or carpooling to and from work.  The participating organizations are grouped by size and winners are those entities with the highest ratios of smart miles to total number of employees in each size category.

The Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG), the City of San Antonio, and the San Antonio-Bexar County Metropolitan Planning Organization conduct the Walk & Roll Corporate Challenge and the public counterpart of the event – the Walk & Roll Personal Challenge – each year to increase awareness of measures that reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and reduce dependence on non-renewable forms of energy.  Added benefits for participants include lower gasoline bills and healthier lifestyles.

All government agencies, companies, schools, and non-profit organizations in the 12-county AACOG region are eligible to participate in the Walk & Roll Corporate Challenge. For more information about this topic please contact Brenda Williams of AACOG at (210) 362-5246 or bwilliams@aacog.com.
